I’m talking about getting the maximum distance that you can get on a consistent basis with the driver. Distance is a result of three things; clubhead speed, pressure against the back of the ball and centereness of hit. All three of these are actually taking care of by the Concept Golf swing principles. As you keep your shoulders completely relaxed during the entire swing, you will be allowing the club to be swung at its maximum speed for you. The golf swing is a form of centrifugal force, the rock on the string. To get the rock to move more quickly you can either speed up the point where the string is held in your hand or lengthen the string. You will not and cannot increase the speed of the rock by pushing on the string! In golf the rock is the clubhead and the string is the shaft of the club and your arms all the way up to your sternum. To speed up the clubhead means that you need to speed up your sternum. You need to move your feet and knees slightly more quickly during the through swing. That will create a great deal more clubhead speed. Trying to make your arms make the club go faster will result in the slowest possible club speed. It will also create the maximum number of miss hits allowable. The bottom line, relax your shoulders completely during the entire swing if you want to hit longer drives

This is the second-most important club in your golf bag. You will use the putter only slightly more than the wedge. This is a club that you’ll use from an infinite variety of distances. That is in part why this may be a slightly tricky club to get to know. The five Concept Golf swing principles apply here just like they do that every club and every shot. The question is how to get the ball to the right distance? The answer is quite simple. Just as in all other shots the Target Principle must be invoked with every wedge shot. In golf we don’t get to look at the target like we do in most other sports. The neck gets in the way and won’t allow us to make a full backswing while looking at the target. Your job is to have a very clear picture of the target in your mind’s eye, your imagination, while you are swinging. That’s the way you can actually see the target while you are swinging. With the target literally in mind, your shots will go that exact distance. It works like magic!

This is without question the most important club in the bag. For most golfers it is also the least practiced. Find a putter you like by practicing with it on a putting green. Become a great putter from 6 feet in by using the games I suggest in Golf Can’t Be the Simple – the Swing. The mechanics of putting are not very important. You can stand, hold the club, position the ball anyway you want. The best putters always use the muscles of the lower back to cause the upper body swinging motion. Using the arms to make the arms move makes putting very difficult. There are two important points to putting; the line and the speed. The line is only 2% of putting a ball in the hole but the speed is 98% of putting a ball in the hole. The line is always determined by the speed of the putt. Know the speed before you select a line. Always take a practice stroke looking at the hole to get the right speed.

This club is number three of the big three. This is the least used and least important of the big three. The big three are putter, wedge, driver, in order of importance. The drive and the driver is the easiest shot in golf. It is played from a perfectly flat lie, the ball is teed in the air and it only happens about 14 times in 18 holes. The problem with the driver is that most golfers are of the impression that the most important thing about this shot is the distance. That mindset creates a situation of great aggressiveness. Big mistake! Reasonable distance is important. Unreasonable distance is for a limited few. Stop trying to catch them.

The five Concept Golf swing principles apply to the driver. Your stance should be about shoulder width, the ball is just forward of center in your stance, the line to the target through the club and the line through the body are diverging lines with the body aiming left of the target, complete and total relaxation in the shoulder area during the entire swing is a must, move to your back foot and then onto your front foot to create the body motion, and use your flexed back leg as your source of power. Do not force the swing or the shot!

You can be a consistent golfer – a consistently good shot maker and shoot consistently low scores. You have all the abilities and capabilities in you right now. Therefore the Concept Golf tag line, “the game within you.” The question is, what’s holding you back? There are a few things you don’t know and they are what are holding you back. What is it that you don’t know? A few principles, that’s all. Principles are those ideas that are the same for everyone, they never change over time and they create the positive effects you want. Once you understand and accept these few principles, your golf swing and your golf game will improve. And your improvement will be permanent.

You see, the only way to really change your swing and your golf game is to change your internal “picture” of the swing and the game. You cannot make any real changes by trying to directly change what your body is doing. That’s the approach of most instruction that uses mechanics and positions to assault your body; the theory of the moment.

Real improvement can only happen from the inside out never from the outside in. We know your perfect swing and your perfect golf game are within you right now. Let’s go find them so you can really enjoy the game.

You will add effortless distance to your shots. Students and readers have added up to 60 yards with drives of 290 yards and a few have added even more distance. Your iron shots will be far more accurate. Students are hitting more targets and that is the important thing. That’s what is lowering their scores. The result; you will be shooting much lower scores. Many who couldn’t break 100 are now easily shooting in the low 80’s, some in the 70’s, and a few even par.

John:

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your wonderful book “Golf, It Can’t Be This Simple – The Swing”. At first I didn’t quite believe the simple concepts that you discussed. I have read countless golf self improvement books and taken numerous lessons. The one thing that stuck in my mind was that if the golf swing really was as simple and fundamental as you stated in your book, than how come the professional instructors and authors couldn’t also capture such simple concepts? I still have no answer to this. But what I do know is that your concepts have radically changed my golf game. I have gone from the point where hitting a sweet solid shot was nothing but a statistical anomaly to the point where it’s the miss-hits that are the anomaly Did your book make me a great golfer? No. But it’s taken me from plain bad to respectable. Now I can get out on the course with any weekend golfer and consistently break 100 with many very decent shots. The game is actually fun. The advice you give in the book is absolutely dead on…at least for me. Obviously there are many fine golfers who have acquired excellent golf skills without the benefits of your book; but for me, your book held the key. The simplicity is brilliant and just clearing ones mind of all the other ‘baggage’ freed me to actually play the game. I just wish I had the book a few years earlier.

Thank you.
